Sustainability at the Nursery

From Sienna Hosta’s inception, it has always been our goal to be as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. Sustainability has been considered in every aspect of the nursery from growing our plants through to sending them to their new homes.

We are determined to constantly improve and adapt to help ensure we are doing our bit to protect the planet. We know we aren't perfect and we're always trying to improve how we operate to be as sustainable as possible. Sienna Hosta policies and practices focus on sustainability as follows.

  • Using peat-free compost to grow our plants
  • Recycling pots and trays for our growing (we do not send plants out in pots) and where additional one are required we obtain these from other local nurseries to reduce plastic wastage
  • Maximising the use of recycled materials
  • Actively encouraging the use of eco friendly pesticides such as garlic wash and nematodes, also using these on our nursery as our primary control method
  • Actively encouraging customers to use peat-free compost
  • Use of insects for biological control of pests
  • Beehives in place at the nursery
  • We have completely updated the whole nursery to LED lighting, which reduces energy consumption
  • Use of Solar panels to reduce energy consumption
  • Office areas are insulated to reduce considerably our power consumption
  • We actively consider new and renewable technology with every new operation at the nursery
  • Harvesting rainwater to reduce the amount of mains water required to irrigate our plants
  • Our nursery cat acts as pest control, we do not use poisons
  • Our nursery hosta garden and surrounding managed woodland provides a suitable environment for wildlife habitat

We use 100% Biodegradable packaging on our mail order, this includes:

  • Biodegradable void filling packing chips
  • Biodegradable shrink wrap
  • Recycled paper
  • Cardboard box
  • Paper packing tape
  • While we still use plastic labels in order to comply with Plant Passporting regulations these are recyclable where the facilities exist
  • Nearly all of the above products are sourced in the UK and bought bulk, thereby reducing transport emissions
