Due to the hot weather, leaf burns and marks are possible and some varieties may be cut back.

Why We Don't Sell Every Hosta We Grow

Why We Don't Sell Every Hosta We Grow

At our specialist hosta nursery, one of the most common questions we hear is: "if you grow so many hostas, why aren't they all available to buy?"

The answer is simple - quality comes before quantity.

A Specialist Hosta Nursery Focused on Quality

Unlike some large-scale plant producers, we are a specialist nursery dedicated to hostas. Our approach is careful, considered, and rooted in long-term plant health rather than fast turnover.

We grow a wide range of hostas, from reliable garden favourites to rare and hard to find hosta varieties that are not widely available. These plants require experience, patience, and the right conditions to grow well - and that's exactly what we provide.

Rare Hostas Take Time to Grow Properly

Many of the rare hostas we grow are naturally slow-growing. Some can take several years to reach a size where they perform well in the garden and truly show the characteristics that make them special - leaf shape, colour, texture and overall presence.

While it may be tempting to sell plants as soon as they are technically saleable, we choose not to. A small or underdeveloped hosta may survive, but it won't thrive and that's not the experience we want for our customers.

Varieties like 'War Paint' are in extremely high demand, but these can take multiple years to grow to a size that we are able to divide them, those divisions then need to be grown to a size to sell. So even if we have 20 plants here at the nursery, if we were lucky and they produced another 20 plants and they all survive division and growing on, then we can only offer 20 plants on our website. Generally the waiting list for 'War Paint' exceeds 300 customers at all times so even when we have a variety available, it it usually a matter of days before a variety we've grown for years is gone and the process starts again.

We Only Sell Hostas That Are Ready for Your Garden

Every hosta we sell meets our own internal standards.

That means:

  • A strong, well established root system.
  • Healthy and balanced growth
  • A size that gives the plant the best chance of success once planted.

If a hosta hasn't reached that point, it stays with us - even if it's in popular demand. We believe selling only garden ready hostas leads to better results, happier gardeners, and stronger plants in the long term.

Why We Hold Back Stokc

Not selling every hosta we grow allows us to:

  • Maintain consistently high plant quality
  • Protect slow-growing and valuable cultivars
  • Ensure customers receive plants that establish as quickly as possible
  • Uphold our reputation as a trusted specialist hosta nursery

Quality Hostas, Grown Properly

When you buy from us, you're not just buying a plant - you're buying the result of years of careful cultivation, observation, and expertise. The hostas we offer for sale are the ones we genuinely believe are ready to thrive in your garden.

The others? They're still growing, still improving, and still being given the time they deserve.
